Ghost Mannequin Photos for Shopify, Amazon and Etsy

Ghost mannequin photos work on all 3 platforms, but each sets different rules: Amazon's main image must be pure white with no visible mannequin, Shopify recommends 2048 x 2048 px squares, and Etsy asks for at least 2000 px and allows 20 photos. One source photo can be exported to fit all 3.

Key facts

  • Amazon's main image must be pure white (RGB 255,255,255), with the product at about 85% of the frame and no mannequin showing any body part.
  • Shopify says 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best for square product images, with files under 20 MB and up to 5000 x 5000 px.
  • Etsy recommends at least 2000 px for listing photos, allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, and needs the 1st photo to be at least 635 px.
  • Shopify publishes no background or fill rule, only its 2048 px size guidance, so consistency across the store is the seller's job.
  • Exporting the same ghost image to 3 sizes costs nothing extra; each generated image on Fluxx.work is 12 credits whatever channel it is for.

Amazon: the strictest main image

Amazon sets the hardest rule for ghost images. The main image must be on pure white, with the product filling about 85% of the frame, and must not show a mannequin or any part of one. A ghost image meets that only if the form is completely gone: no stand, no clear plastic neck, no edge of the mannequin visible through an armhole. Check those areas at full size before uploading, because a listing can be suppressed for them. In the supporting images Amazon is more relaxed, so ghost front and back can sit beside an on-model image. The full rules are in the Amazon image guidelines.

Shopify: you set the rules, so set them once

Shopify publishes a size recommendation (2048 x 2048 px usually displays best for square images) but no background or fill rule, which makes consistency your job. Pick 1 background colour, 1 aspect ratio and 1 garment size in the frame, and apply them to every product, because Shopify collection pages show products side by side and any difference stands out. Match the aspect ratio to your theme's product card, or the theme will crop the hem or the collar. Ghost images suit Shopify well: a store where every garment sits on the same invisible form looks like one brand. More is in the Shopify photography guide.

Etsy: room for the whole story

Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing and recommends at least 2000 px, so ghost images do not have to compete for space. A good Etsy apparel listing might open with an on-model or styled photo, which suits Etsy's more personal feel, then add ghost front and back, a fabric close-up, a label or care shot, and a size reference. Etsy shoppers often buy from small makers, so the ghost images do a particular job there: they show the garment is made to a consistent standard. The platform's own requirements are summarised in Etsy product image requirements.

One source, 3 exports

Shoot or generate each ghost image once, then export per platform. For Amazon, a pure white background with the garment at about 85% of the frame. For Shopify, your store's chosen background and aspect ratio at 2048 x 2048 px for squares. For Etsy, at least 2000 px. Keep the file names identical apart from a channel suffix, such as SKU0412-front-amazon, so each upload uses the right version. Generating a channel-specific background with AI is another image at 12 credits; resizing the same image is free.

Common rejections and how to avoid them

The ghost image problems that get listings flagged or look unprofessional are predictable. On Amazon: an off-white background, a visible mannequin stand or neck, or a garment that fills too little of the frame. On Shopify: inconsistent sizes that make collection pages ragged, and crops that cut off part of the garment. On Etsy: low-resolution images that look soft on the zoom view. All 3 are fixed by checking the export at full size against the platform's rule before upload, rather than after a shopper or a review team notices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ghost mannequin photos allowed as Amazon main images?

Yes, if no part of the mannequin is visible and the background is pure white (RGB 255,255,255) with the garment at about 85% of the frame. Check the neckline and armholes at full size.

What size should ghost mannequin images be for Shopify?

Shopify says 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best for square product images, with files under 20 MB. Match the aspect ratio to your theme's product card so it does not crop the garment.

How many ghost mannequin photos should an Etsy listing have?

Etsy allows up to 20 photos, so a ghost front and back fit easily alongside an on-model or styled opener, a fabric close-up and a size reference: 6 or 7 images covers most garments.

Can I use the same ghost mannequin image on Amazon, Shopify and Etsy?

Yes, with 3 exports: pure white at about 85% fill for Amazon, your store's background at 2048 x 2048 px for Shopify, and at least 2000 px for Etsy.
